Season Water Tips

SEASONAL WATER TIPS #2

BASEMENT FLOODING PREVENTION

While The City of Toronto works on improving the current sewer system, there are still many steps homeowners can take to help prevent their basement from flooding as a result of severe weather and sewer back-ups.

Here’s how:

  • Don’t pour kitchen grease down the drain
  • Clear eaves troughs and downspouts of debris
  • Disconnect downspouts that empty into the City’s sewer system, where appropriate
  • Install a backwater calve and a basement sump pump
  • Use soft surface landscaping such as porous pavement and shrubs
  • Ensure the group is slowing away from foundation walls
  • Seal window wells and fix leaks in basement walls and around windows

The are also City subsidies of up to $3200 per property that homeowners can take advantage of. These subsidies assist with the cost of installing certain flood protection devices.

To report a flooded basement, call 311.  24 hours a day 7 days a week.
